In cooperation with the Deutsche Archaeologische Institut, through their Madrid delegation, we have designed a research line on the transformation of the local shrines after the Roman conquest. We have choose some places were we know that local pre-roman gods where worshiped under Roman rule.
A preliminary inventory was made on the potential interesting archaeological places for the study of the subject and our first choice was the S. Miguel da Mota (Alandroal) hill top, where lays the well-known shrine dedicated to the Endovellicus god. Though we already know many sculptures and inscriptions gathered there by José Leite de Vasconcellos, in 1890, no archaeological work has been done aiming to identify the actual location and nature of the cult place. The excavations we have already done didn’t allow yet neither the identification of buildings nor other structures related to the cult, despite several new evidences gathered. Naturally, the new work runs parallel with a general re-evaluation of all the ancient data on the National Archaeological Museum, in Lisbon.
Other relevant place for the study of this subject is the archaeological site of Cabeço das Fráguas (Guarda), where an inscription on Lusitanian language and many arae are known, showing in the area a cult place to local pre-Roman deities and that they were worshiped also under the Romans. Once again the actual on-going work will be complemented by a general re-evaluation of the already available data.
