The archaeological excavation program at Mesas do Castelinho (Almodôvar) had begun by request of the National Agency for Cultural Heritage (IPPC) as that site suffered a major destruction in 1986. All the work at this site is done in collaboration with the local public authorities, and so we always look at our work there as some kind of public service to local populations, in a context of cultural heritage rescue and divulgation and also oriented to cultural tourism. As these components have always been present, the “scientific agenda” needs to fit these main goals.
The first phase of the works dealt with the definition of the main historical periods of the site occupation, besides the archaeological stratigraphy and context artefact studies, a special attention was paid to the environmental themes and the way the population had deal with them all along the centuries.
After several years of continuous work, the research line is now oriented for the study of the distinct spatial organization plans in the site. So, besides the excavation, a general geo-physical survey was done, to obtain the most important guide lines of the different urban designs.
As we have identified an important urban plan dating from the First Century B.C., that means from an early moment of the Roman presence in this area of the Iberian Peninsula, which has no continuity in the period of the making of the Roman Province of Lusitania, under Augustus, as the site decay and was abandoned. The study of such a place can be seen as a good example of the reasons for failure on the making of Roman towns.
