Investigação:
Relying on a taphonomic and techno-economic approach to lithic industries, the aim of my research project is to investigate regionalization phenomena and parcelling of territories during the Middle Palaeolithic between MIS 5 and 3.
Complex mobility strategies, particularly well visible during MIS 3, could be the result of evolutionary processes already in place during MIS 5, or could be interpreted as a case of discontinuity relative to the preceding periods. The goal, in essence, is thus to retrace the strategies of use territory and ultimately distinguish between continuity and rupture in the MIS 5 to 3. The analysis of the lithic industries from various sites in Portugal, dating between MIS 5 and 3, will allow for a consideration of the potential links between these industries, in terms of filiation or discontinuity, in a region continuously occupied during this period. Comparisons with the Mediterranean façade of Iberia are undertaken via study of sites in the region of Murcia (Zilhão, dir.). Comparisons with sites from Southwestern France studied during my PhD are also carried out. New data from Gatzarria cave (Occidental Pyrenees, France), whose re-excavation I currently direct, is also provide additional terms of comparison. All in all, my objectives are to interpret population dynamics in the early Upper Pleistocene (MIS 5-MIS 3) of Southwestern Europe as a whole and the explanation for the evolutionary mechanisms at play during these phases, which remain poorly understood.
