Place and Personhood in the Southwest Iberian Bronze Age: Applying Relational Ontology to Development-Led Archaeology Bolsa de Doutoramento FCT UNIARQ (2024.00420.BD)
Over the past three decades, the implementation of intensive agricultural irrigation systems has driven large-scale development in the Lower Alentejo, resulting in an influx of archaeological data published in high-quality reports. However, there has been little work done in the way of an up-to-date synthesis of this “grey literature”. This project aims to address this gap by analyzing data pertaining to the Bronze Age, collected primarily from development-led archaeological contexts in the Lower Alentejo. This project will use geographic information systems to quantify the data and apply relational ontology as the theoretical framework, particularly examining the concepts of personhood and place-making. In theoretical terms, the Bronze Age data from this region have been interrogated rather unsatisfactorily; the concept of the Bronze Age “chief” persists, with a focus on competitive individualism as a key incentive for social change. This approach has resulted in an interpretation in which subjects and objects are categorically distinct, with objects treated as passive, thus ignoring their potential to embody sociocultural values. This study will attempt to construct the Early/Middle Bronze Age and Late Bronze Age “self” in relational terms, focusing on the relationships between humans, objects, landscape, and architecture, thus developing a new baseline for investigating the Bronze Age in the southwest of Iberia.
